The 35-year-old Nicolai, a Rio 2016 Olympic silver medalist, and the 24-year-old Cottafava are in their second season as partners and are guaranteed at least a fifth-place finish in Hamburg, matching their best result in an Elite16 event this season, obtained back in March in Tepic, Mexico.

Their campaign at the Am Rothenbaum Stadium has been nearly flawless so far as the Italians have dropped just one set in the five matches they played in Hamburg this week.
