Egonu could cross the 500-point mark in this weekend's match

Teammates in the Italian national team, opposites Paola Egonu and Sylvia Nwakalor will star in what’s expected to be one of the most exciting battles of the Lega Pallavolo vivo Serie A1 Femminile this weekend.

Ranked first and third in the Italian League scorers' table, the 23-year-old Egonu and the 22-year-old Nwakalor will be in the spotlight when their teams, Prosecco Doc Imoco Volley Conegliano and Il Bisonte Firenze, meet on Sunday at 20.00. The match was postponed from the 11th round of the first leg of the season, while all other meetings set to take place over the weekend count for the 11th round of the second leg.

Egonu has been her usual self this season, leading the league’s scoring table with 496 points so far. Nwakalor comes third with 395 while Unet E-Work Busto Arsizio’s Camilla Mingardi is sandwiched between the two with 433 points to her name.

The two teams are currently in different places in the standings with defending champions Conegliano entering the weekend in second place with 54 points (19 wins, three losses) and with hopes of moving into first. Firenze are trying to improve from their current seventh-place spot with 32 points (11 wins, 11 losses) ahead of the start of the playoffs.

The two teams are coming from impactful victories over the Lega’s third-placed Vero Volley Monza. Firenze surprised the former leaders with a five-set upset last Sunday and Conegliano eliminated their rivals from the CEV Champions League with a 3-1 win on Thursday.

Conegliano and Firenze have unfinished business since last December, when the team from Florence caused the biggest upset of the current club season, defeating the reigning Italian and European champions and ending a 76-match winning streak that lasted almost two years.
